a woman, a cat and a mermaid

Photograph by Don Shades

This was amongst the first set of poems myself and Maz performed together. From a performance called ‘about a woman who was once a girl’. It speaks for itself I think.

submerged in silk,

you dive, disappear and rise,

emerging baptised and disguised

as a mermaid.

i squint at you,

your feline eyes,

crown you the sea-queen

in my mind.

soon i will follow

you down to the ocean floor

where the shape of time is different.

i will peer into your nine faces,

think of the similarities between cats

and mermaids.
